Admission to PhD Programmes (Second semester 2017-18)

Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani is a “Deemed to be University” established in 1964 under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956. Its campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai provide to over 12,000 students an all-round educational and co-curricular experience that is second to none in India. It offers UG, PG and PhD level programmes in Engineering, Science, Pharmacy, Management, Economics & Finance and Humanities & Social Sciences.

Applications are invited for admission to PhD Programmes at Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses in the following disciplines:

Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Economics and Finance, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Management. Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy, Physics, Humanities and Social Sciences. Interdisciplinary areas such as Biotechnology, Energy, Environment, Robotics, Nano-science & Nanotechnology and Water Management.

Input Qualification:
■ ME/MPharm/MBA/MPhil from an Institute of repute or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% in aggregate.
■ Candidates with an MSc/BE/BPharm or an equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% in aggregate may also be considered for PhD admission. For PhD Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences, candidates with an MA and with a minimum of 55% aggregate may also be considered.
Full-time students: Candidates are required to devote full time towards PhD. Shortlisted candidates will be required to come to Pilani/Goa/Hyderabad campuses for test and/or interview. CSIR/UGC-NET qualified candidates will be exempted from written test.
Part-time students: Candidates working in organizations situated in close vicinity of campuses of BITS Pilani will be admitted under this scheme.

Assistantship: Those admitted to full-time PhD programme will be considered for Research / Project Assistantships up to Rs.25,000 per month. Selected candidates will be required to participate in teaching and other academic programmes of the institute under the guidance of a mentor.

Pattern & Syllabus of Examination: The Applicants shall be subjected to an Aptitude Test with a total 100 marks covering the following subjects/ topics. Aptitude Test will be comprising four parts [Part-A, Part-B, Part-C(i), Part-C(ii)]. The total duration of the Aptitude Test will be 2 hours (120 Minutes). There is no negative marking.

Part Syllabus
A – General Knowledge

(25 marks with 25 questions of 1 mark each)

Topics: Indian Geoqraphv, Freedom Struaale. Culture & Sports, General Polity & Constitution of India, Indian Economy, General Science, Current Affairs and Reasoning & Analytical ability of 10th standard.
B – Mathematics

(25 marks with 25 questions of 1 mark each)

Topics: Number Systems, Decimals & Fractions. Percentages, Ratio & Proportion, Profit & Loss, Simple Interest, Average, Discount, Partnership, Time & Work and Time & Distance.
C(i) – English

(25 marks with 25 questions of 1 mark each)

Topics: Articles, Prepositions. Conjunctions. Tenses. Verbs, Synonyms & Antonyms, Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, Proverbs, Phrases and Questions from small unseen passage.
C(ii) – Regional Language (Hindi)

(25 marks with 25 questions of 1 mark each)

Topics: मिश्र व संयुक्त वाक्य, वाक्यों का रूपांतरण, स्वर-संधि, अलंकार, मुहावरे एवं लोकोक्तियाँ, अशुद्ध वाक्य शोधन, अपठित गद्यांश
